Fashion Foundations, pt. 6 – wrapping it up, and some thoughts.

We all want to look good and feel good in our clothes. We spend lots of money on clothing every year, because we want to carry ourselves with our heads held high, backs straight, confident in the fact that we look great. Think of yourself as a stylish building, and your bras and undies are the foundation. Without a good foundation, that building just won’t look right! I’m writing a series on building those Fashion Foundations.

This week, we’ve learned about proper bra fit, bra wardrobes, panties, shapewear, and how to take care of all of the above items. I hope that this series has been educational for a lot of ladies – and maybe some men as well.

(Warning – opinions ahead.)

One of the amazing things about my job as a Bra Fit Specialist is the transformation that I see over and over every day. Women come into my work feeling down, and they leave feeling fantastic. It is amazing how one little article of clothing can change a woman’s mood, as well as her appearance. Not only that, it changes how they feel about themselves. My boss at work commented to a customer this week that I was “all about the pretty stuff” – and it’s true. I ADORE sexy lingerie.

I spent my younger years believing that my larger breasts were destined to be covered by bras that were best suited to my grandmother. I didn’t wear an underwire until college, and even after that the sizes I needed were frumpy looking. Until I was properly fitted, I didn’t think that sexy and comfortable lingerie would be available to women of my size. Some ladies that come in who are petite have expressed that they want classic and beautiful lingerie – not this twee cutesy stuff that tends to come in their size. They want beautiful lace and soft fabrics in classy colors, not hot pink polka dots and bright green stripes. I always thought that smaller women have less of a problem finding sexy lingerie – not true! Their troubles may be different than fuller-figured ladies, but they still have just as difficult of a time.

I believe every woman, no matter what her age, size, or shape, deserves beautiful, well-fitted lingerie – and she definitely deserves to feel sexy in her skin as well as her clothes.

So…let’s say you have this fancy gathering to go to. You spend a lot of money on a gorgeous dress at some high-end store. The dress is beautiful and fits amazing – all silk and handmade lace, beaded with jet. You go to the party, wear the dress, and get tons of compliments. Then you go home, throw it in the washing machine, and fling it in the dryer.

No? Then why would you do that to your bras, or your panties, or your shapewear? The designer of that gown intended for you to take care of it in a certain way, and the designers of your lingerie items intend on you caring for your products based on their recommendations. I hear so many women every day talking about how they just “throw their stuff in the washer”. Yeah, it’s easy to do, but it’s certainly not easy for your underthings! All that being knocked around, crowded by everything else in the washer, then flung to the side in the spin cycle – that’s HARD on those delicate fibers. I have a confession to make – I was one of those people. I threw my bras/undies/shapewear/whatever in the washer and dryer with my jeans and tees – and CONSTANTLY had problems with my molded cups crumpling, my wires coming out, and holes in the stitching. Since I’ve started washing by hand, I have had none of these problems, and my bras have lasted me right at a year and will possibly last longer.

Hand washing is the easiest way to extend the life of your lingerie.

The important thing when handwashing is making sure you use the right wash. You need a wash that will clean thoroughly, but gently. Forever New and Dreft are some good ones, and so are most biodegradable/organic washes. Steer clear of any washes containing petroleum, (most machine detergents do), since this could trap dirt in the fibers. Also, word on the street is that a certain wash (the stuff you shear from sheep-ite) isn’t very good either – it degrades lycra, causing the stretch in most bras to disappear. If you MUST wash lingerie in the washing machine, do yourself a favor and invest in a lingerie bag. This helps keep all delicate items together, so they don’t get knocked around as much, and will also help you remember to not put anything in the bag in the dryer!

These are the following two excuses I hear when it comes to handwashing, and why I think they’re bogus:

I never have time to wash, I’m too busy!
Depending on the level of activity, you can go two to three wearings before having to wash. However, it all depends on personal preference. In my case, I sweat a lot, and it is hot as Hades in the summer, so I usually wash every day. Some ladies just save up all their bras and undies, and then partake in a massive weekly wash on Sundays. Find what works with your schedule!

But I have to rinse for what feels like HOURS, and my stuff still feels soapy!
Some companies have started creating rinse-free washes, which prevents having to rinse and rinse and RINSE. The wash does all the work of getting the gunk out during a soak. It also saves time because you can go do some other things while washing. I typically wash my bras every day while I shower.

My favorite wash is Soak, a rinse-free wash that helps to strengthen the lycra fibers in lingerie while still getting them totally clean and fresh.

Let me show you how easy it is to use!

Step 1 – Get Soak. Game show hostess hand motions not necessary.

Thumbs up for Soak

Step 2 – Go to your sink or other washing location.
Soak step 2

Step 3 – Run cool water, add a squirt of Soak.
Soak step 3

Step 4 – Add lingerie and swish a bit – you only need enough water to cover your items!
Soak step 4

Step 5 – Let items soak for 15 minutes. Go shower, play with the dog, check Facebook, etc.
Soak step 5

Step 6 – Pull items out, gently squeeze to remove excess water, and hang to dry!
Soak step 6

TA-DA, everything is now clean!
Thumbs up for clean bras!

Another important way to take care of your lingerie is to NOT wear it more than a day at a time. Take a rubber band, stretch it across a room and hold it there for a long time. Eventually it will become misshapen and will not snap back into place. Those lycra fibers in your bras and in your shapewear act the same way! If you don’t give those items a day of rest between wearings, the fibers will stretch out much faster and shorten their life. So, on Monday, wear Bra 1 and Shaper 1, on Tuesday wear Bra 2 and Shaper 2, on Wednesday go back to Bra 1 and Shaper 1…and so on. That day of rest between wearings gives those fibers time to relax and snap back into their natural positions.

If you are spending good money on your underthings, you want them to last as long as they possibly can. If you are rotating them on a regular basis and hand-washing, they should last you a few years, easily!

Sometimes we all need some extra “oomph” in our slinky dresses and slim-fitting clothes. So we step into some shapewear. It smooths, it tucks, it pulls in where we need it most. Got that little bit of love handle that pokes out under the jersey dress? Slip into a high-waisted brief, and everything just smooths out. Spanx, one of the most popular brands, have become so synonymous with shapewear that most women have started calling all shapewear “Spanx” – but that’s only one brand! Many companies create and specialize in shapewear garments.

When you are deciding on shapewear, you need to consider how much “control” you need. Do you want something that’s just going to smooth over, or possibly reshape your body (and maybe take off a few inches in the process)? Firmer control garments will be thicker and heavier, and may contain stays made out of plastic or other boning. Also, firmer control will feel tighter on the body. The tighter it is, the more it holds in.

The most important thing about shapewear – it needs to be snug in order to do its job, but it needs to be comfortable. Like wearing a bra, if you feel anything pinching or biting, don’t wear it! When I’m recommending shapewear to someone at work, I find out if they’re used to the feel first. If they haven’t worn shapewear before, I usually recommend they go up a size and try it on. Usually a size up helps them get used to the snug feeling without feeling too tight. After getting used to it, they can go to the size they’re supposed to be and not feel too constricted.

Also, what style of shapewear do you need? A lot of women (myself included) who want to smooth out their whole abdomen area prefer higher waisted garments. Some ladies feel like those roll down so they want something to pull over the head, or a full-body garment. It all depends, so I suggest trying different styles on. For high-waisted styles, look for a wider top band to prevent it from rolling down.

Another problem that a lot of women have with shapewear is putting it on. Just putting on the garment can feel like a heavy workout with all that pulling, tugging, yanking, and heavy breathing. The majority of the getting dresses problems happen with the high waisted thigh shapers. However, there are a few tricks that make it a lot easier:
- Be dry. Don’t put on your shapewear right out of the shower. Put on your undies, throw on a light robe, and relax. Cool off, make sure you’re dry. That super-clingy fabric is even more difficult to put on when wet.
- Use what I call the “band” trick – roll up the legs to the crotch, and roll down the tummy part to the crotch as well. This makes it look like a single band with a panty. Hold the band with both hands, making sure that nothing rolls down. Step into the garment, and get the crotch situated correctly. Then, roll the legs down and roll the tummy up. This cuts down on that tugging and pulling a lot!
- Make sure the crotch is sitting correctly, make sure the legs are where they are supposed to be (usually mid-thigh), and make sure that the high waist comes right under your bra band.

A personal note – one major benefit that I’ve found about shapewear is that it has allowed me to wear many more dresses and skirts. I used to steer clear of them because of the dreaded “chub rub” – where your thighs rub together so much they cause severe chafing. I used to have to wear ratty shorts under my outfits, so I could never wear anything slim fitting. I tried using creams or gels, but I would inevitably sweat or rub them off. Now, with my Spanx, I can wear summer dresses and pencil skirts and not worry about my thighs being red and raw by the end of the day!
