Places to go: Cato Fashions – Hammond, LA.

The main problem I have with blogging about fashion is money. I am ALWAYS on the lookout for cute clothes that won’t cost me an arm and a leg. (Don’t get me started about a plus sized seersucker dress. I just want a basic seersucker dress for summer – but I can’t seem to find one under $75 in my size. GAH.) I have so many ideas for cute outfits but only so much money to implement them. I really try to remix items that are in my closet…but sometimes you just get sick of looking at the same stuff day in and day out.

A few weeks ago, I was told about a new Cato Fashions store opening up in Hammond, LA. I’ve never been to a Cato before, but I’ve heard a lot about it from a few friends and coworkers. I happened to luck out and had last Wednesday off, so I got to attend the grand opening!

This place is packed with stuff – from size 0 to size 26. I love the fact that this store covers all sizes! I poked around the store for a bit, checking out everything. One of the things I really liked was that a lot of cute styles were offered in both straight and plus sizes, but there were some styles that were only available in plus, and vice versa.

They carry a huge selection of accessories as well – shoes, handbags, and jewelry.

I like the shimmery cream purse with the gold hardware in the middle.

I tried on a pair of those teal shoes and found that the heel is NOT sky high – which means these are heels I can actually walk in!

These espadrille wedges are SO CUTE.

The absolute best part about this store is that everything is VERY reasonably priced. You can easily walk in and pick out an entire outfit, accessories and all, for under $100.

I know that sometimes cheap fashion also means cheap materials and/or shoddy workmanship, but I really looked at everything and found that the quality is very high for the price. No missed stitches, no paper-thin fabrics, no cutting corners. As much as I love to save money, I also want to be 100% sure that the item I am getting is not going to fall apart the first time I wash it or wear it. I am very particular when it comes to shopping. I want my clothes to last!

Of course, the major test was to find some items and try them on! So I picked through the racks, found a ton of great stuff to try, and loaded up my arms for a trip to the fitting room.

My choices!

Here are some of my favorites –

I loved this black and white graphic dress – it draped nicely and was actually a bit big for me. However, the skinny red belt that came with it was WAY too small. The belt was attached to the dress so I don’t think it had been switched out or anything. I think I may head back and pick this up and maybe put another belt with it.

This is a dress – not two pieces! I LOVE the colors – I’m all about lime and blue this year. The top fit fine but the bottom was a little snug (please excuse my tum, I was not wearing my shapewear that day). I think I would have to go up one size in it, but otherwise, it is super cute and can be dressed up or down! I probably wouldn’t wear black shoes with it though…

OH HELLO YES. Doesn’t this top and skirt just scream retro? The skirt is blue lace over a blue lining. I figured I’d try mixing patterns – dots and diamonds – since the blue on blue wouldn’t clash so much with the dotted top.

As cute as those were, this is the outfit I went home with:

OOTD - Maxing out!
I am OBSESSED with maxi dresses this year. I put this on and knew I had to have it. I love how summery it is, and that I can wear it with a ton of different things. The ruffles on the neckline are not too poofy, and I feel that the v-neck and the chevron pattern is very flattering. Not only that, but it goes with my teal sandals from Payless!

While I was there, I spoke with the manager, Amanda (who was amazingly kind and sweet). She told me that Cato gets new stuff all the time, so styles stay really current. I’m really looking forward to seeing what is in store for summer and fall. You can bet I will be back to do some more shopping there!

Places to go: Lola Boutique – New Orleans, LA

On my last shopping trip to NOLA with my mom, Meg at Abeille NOLA suggested that we stop by Lola Boutique while we were out. We were getting ready to head that way to check out places for lunch anyway, so we headed there to check it out!

Lola Boutique

Lola ended up being a fantastic little shop, nestled smack-dab in the Riverbend area. It’s right next door to Camellia Grill (one of New Orleans’ most loved breakfast places) and right off of Oak Street, which is full of restaurants and other little shops. The girls working there that day were very sweet and fun, and they made us feel right at home.

Lola Boutique

Lola carries a wide assortment of clothing and accessories – from jeans to tees to shoes and jewelry. Mom and I perused the racks – even though I was too big for most of the jeans and fitted items, I left with a very cute sheer blousy gray top that I can pair with jeans and boots for fall – in an XL! It just goes to show that you never know what will work on you until you try it on.

They carry a lot of jewelry pieces – some from local designers and artists, which I love. They had everything from dainty necklaces to big chunky colorful rings. I must say, I love that fact that a lot of jewelry makers are creating stretchy-band rings – it allows everyone to enjoy the cocktail ring trend!

Along with adorable clothing and accessories, they also have a lot of adorable items that are great for gifts! Tons of candles and other trinkets – all reasonably priced. Perfect for those workplace Secret Santa swaps, or something people would actually want at a White Elephant holiday party! (My friends and I have a White Elephant party every year. It’s a lot of fun – and if the gift is THAT bad, it finds its way to next year’s party.)

So if you’re planning your annual holiday shopping excursions – whether for party frocks or fabulous gifts – avoid the mall rat race and check out Lola Boutique!

Places to go: Purse Bag Pattie’s – Hammond, LA

Purse Bag Pattie's

You know how some women have an unhealthy obsession with shoes? I have the same problem with purses. I am a purse addict. I had so many handbags a few years ago that Doug made me swear that I would not buy any more of them. Messenger bags, satchels, hobos, totes – I love them all. The bigger the better. (I’m a firm believer that bigger women should carry bigger bags – it looks more proportional.)

A couple of months ago, I was madly in love with the Mulberry Oversized Alexa bag. I’m still in love with it, as a matter of fact. However, my empty pocketbook (or should I say low on funds) was not in love with it. I’m not ashamed to say that I frequently look for “designer inspired” bags – that way I get the look I love without the exorbitant price tag. (I would never buy an out-and-out forgery, though.) I did a bit of digging online to find some similar styles, and found a great one on JCPenney that I ordered. Sadly, when they came in they were these teensy things that would barely hold my wallet and makeup bag. I just handed them back to the lady behind the counter and asked to return them.

On my way back from JCPenney, I decided to check out Purse Bag Pattie’s to see if they had any similar styles. The girl at the Covington store (which has since relocated to Amite) knew just what I was looking for, but she said they were out. A few text messages and a phone call later, she said that the Hammond store was holding my bag. I hopped in my car and drove right over to Hammond Square Mall.

When you walk in, you are greeted by a rainbow wall of colorful handbags in many different styles. A couch refurbished with old jeans is in the front of the store, and is surprisingly comfortable to sit on! The entire store has a feeling of “recycled chic”, but doesn’t seem cluttered or stuffy at all. It is actually very open and bright.

Purse Bag Patties

Their selection is fantastic – lots of styles in an assortment of colors! The majority of their stuff runs about $45 to $50 – AND you either get a free wallet with each purse, or a discount on your bag! They also have a ton of fleur-de-lis bags, bedazzled with crystals. Not my thing, but I know quite a few ladies that like that look. They also carry some name-brand bags – some designers they have are Chinese Laundry, Nicole Lee, and Rampage.

Purse Bag Patties

This vending machine carried wallets! You just chose the one you wanted, pressed the keys, and BAM out comes a wallet! How cute is that?

Purse Bag Patties

Here’s my sweet Alexa-esque bag that I picked up – black with gunmetal findings.

And on my next trip, I picked up this awesome red bag with gold findings! I’ve been looking at getting a red bag for a while, and I love the color. This will work for any season!

Purse Bag Patties

If you are as hooked on handbags as I am, but don’t feel like breaking the bank, drive up to Hammond and check them out! It doesn’t hurt that there is also an ULTA and a TJ Maxx right there, too – and a short drive away you can grab lunch in downtown Hammond, which is simply adorable. (I suggest Mariners Inn – fantastic burgers!)
